Sugilite was first discovered in Japan in 1944 by Ken-ichi Sugi, after whom it is named. Sugilite is a relatively rare pink to purple cyclosilicate mineral. Sugilite crystallizes in the hexagonal system with prismatic crystals. The crystals are rarely found.
