Libyan Desert Glass is a rare and mysterious natural glass, formed from an ancient meteorite impact in the Sahara Desert. It is believed to be around 29 million years old and is prized for its unique golden-yellow color, high silica content, and strong metaphysical properties.
Key Characteristics:
- Type: Natural impact glass (Tektite)
- Color: Pale yellow, golden, honey-colored, or translucent greenish-yellow
- Hardness: 6.5 – 7 on the Mohs scale (similar to quartz)
- Origin: Sahara Desert (Libya & Egypt)
Formation & Scientific Mystery
Libyan Desert Glass is thought to have formed from a meteorite impact or airburst explosion that melted the desert sand, creating this unique natural glass.
It has a 98% silica content, similar to obsidian, but lacks the iron and magnesium found in other tektites like Moldavite.
