What Is Emerald?

Emerald is a green beryl colored by chromium and sometimes vanadium.
It belongs to the same family as:

• Aquamarine (blue beryl)
• Morganite (pink beryl)
• Heliodor (yellow beryl)
• Goshenite (colorless beryl)

Hardness

• 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs scale
• Durable, but often contains natural inclusions (“jardin”), making it more fragile than aquamarine or morganite.

Color

• Rich green to bluish-green
• Most prized: vivid medium to deep green
• Color intensity is the main factor in value; slightly bluish-green emeralds are highly sought after.

Major sources include:

• Colombia – Muzo, Chivor, Coscuez (highest quality stones)
• Brazil – Bahia, Minas Gerais
• Zambia – Kagem mine
• Zimbabwe – Sandawana mines
• Pakistan – Swat Valley
