What Is Amber?

• Origin: Fossilized resin from ancient trees (conifers and angiosperms)
• Age: Typically 20–100 million years old
• Type: Organic gemstone (not a mineral)
• Transparency: Transparent to translucent; can also be opaque

Hardness

• 2 – 2.5 on the Mohs scale
• Soft and lightweight, can be scratched easily but is easy to carve

Color

• Classic honey-golden
• Yellow, orange, reddish-brown, brown
• Rare: green, blue, or black (depends on origin and inclusions)
• Can contain inclusions: insects, plant material, or bubbles

Where It’s Found

• Baltic Region (Lithuania, Russia, Poland) – the most famous and largest source
• Dominican Republic – often contains blue or green amber
• Myanmar (Burma)
• Mexico
